HEROES’ DAY

Well happy All Saints’ Day! Yes that’s right, if All Hallows’ Eve gets so much airtime every year, then why not All Hallows’ Day itself eh?

It’s the day when the Catholic Church celebrates the beatified saints, the ‘hallowed’ ones who sat on top of poles and had stigmata, or who were just miraculously nice to people. Even the odd ones, like the saint who learned how to fly, and the one whose body picked up its decapitated head and walked around with it. They all get a cheer on All Saints’ Day…

I’m being flippant. Truth is I’ve known a few saints I’d very much like to celebrate - people who’ve helped me on my way, shown me holiness in action, selflessly given the miracles of time and patience. Some are even still with us, and tonight I raise a glass of hallowed… er… apple juice, to those champions of faith.

I wonder if it could be a thing. Heroes’ Day - a feast of celebration for those quiet and not so quiet heroes in our lives. Sure, the kids can dress up as Batman and Captain Marvel, and you can come up with some fun games and ideas for cakes and sweets, I suppose. Kids work isn’t really my thing, to be honest, but then it wouldn’t just be for children. There’d be tipples and toasts and colourful nibbles, and a chance to be thankful for all those saints who lit the way for you, and continue to do so.
