SPRING MORNING SUNSHINE

I phoned my parents today - I had to tell my Mum that Sammy and I are off to the Royal Windsor Horse Show tomorrow and won’t be around.

I was so thrilled when my Dad answered. He always was the one who leapt to the phone first, and before March this year, it would have been de rigueur I suppose, to hear his cheery voice on the other end of the line. For the last few weeks though, my Mum’s been answering the telephone. Today, he was back.

“Hello Matthew,” he said, as always he does - I mean slightly slurred but nevertheless typically. How lovely. It was as if someone had opened a window on a spring morning, or if you saw a friend you haven’t seen in a while and the years suddenly don’t matter.

We spoke for a while and then Mum came on. She, probably more than anyone, knows that the Royal Windsor Horse Show isn’t something I would ever have chosen to go to. But I’m not going for the horses; I’m going because that’s the kind of thing that brings spring-morning joy to Sammy. Plus, someday we’ll level it up by going to the space museum or the planetarium.

“I’ll probably do some classic people-watching,” I said. That’s always fun - especially at ‘posh’ events.

So, my Dad’s well enough to answer the phone. That will do for a spring day. That will do nicely.
