STAR WARS DAY

Star Wars Day. Hmm. Everyone’s going crazy for it this year it seems, wishing the fourth on each other, slicing hands off with lightsabers, falling down garbage chutes, jumping into hyperspace on a whim… you know the kind of thing.

I don’t know of any other pop culture thing that has its own day. Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, I suppose has Towel Day, but I don’t think it’s quite the same. James Joyce fans celebrate Bloom’s Day, I’ve heard - roaming around Dublin. If you can name the date for either of those without looking them up by the way, well done you. But neither are as obvious as Star Wars Day.

I don’t know what you’re supposed to do on a day like SWD. It seems odd to wish each other, ‘may the fourth be with you’ as it doesn’t really mean anything. May Tuesday be with you. May 5 o’clock be with you. And also with you. If it’s a weird blessing, then that’s a sort of paganism I’m not up for, and if it’s just a fun thing to say, then that’s fun - but also silly. Mind you, Star Wars itself…

Well I don’t want to get into trouble with the Star Wars fans.

Perhaps what you’re supposed to do is just celebrate a thing you like. Fair enough. I like trying to be kind and brave like the main characters, and choosing selfless devotion to the light, rather than letting fear draw me on the path to the dark side. But that’s every day, I hope.

Maybe I’ll just do what I did when I was eight and pretend I’m opening automatic doors with a wave of a Jedi hand. I’ll know really though, won’t I, Star Wars fans, that I stopped being eight a long long time ago…
