ISLAND RESOURCES

I was awake early this morning. Not by choice. I creaked one eye open, saw that the time began with a 4, tried to go back to sleep and then gave up.

What do you do in the dingy hours? I couldn’t turn the light on, I couldn’t read. Even moving seemed like it might risk stirring the sleeper next to me.

I grabbed my phone, hid under the covers, and watched Jeff Bezos launching his rocket from Cape Canaveral. Blue Horizon, not SpaceX; SpaceX is the other fella.

I had it on mute, which, if anything, made it feel less real somehow. It shot up in a cloud of fire (couldn’t hear it), the boosters pushed it into the black sky, and a hundred people in t-shirts sat behind computers and punched the air in silent celebration. I love space stuff, but you know, I wasn’t that excited. I was wondering whether it might be possible to be post-capitalist but not a socialist. I mean, do you think some people just have more money than is good for any of us? I mean for humanity! It sometimes feels like we’re all trying to survive on a desert island while Branson Crusoe over there is busy fashioning a shuttle out of the island’s entire supply of coconuts.

The trouble with waking up so early of course is that I’m likely to be grumpy this evening. I wonder if it’s an energy thing? If I’m channeling all my energy into staying awake, how much is left to manage the grumpy fuse?

I guess sometimes you just have to be honest about your available resources for the good of those around you. Don’t you?
